NEWSFLASH @ end June 2017 Inmemorium - FamilySearch microfilms gone

FamilySearch have announced they will discontinue their microfilm distribution services on September 1, 2017.

All orders placed by 31 August 2017 will be honoured, so any orders by members will need to be received by WAGS no later than 30 August

The change is the result of significant progress made in FamilySearch’s microfilm digitization efforts, the cost of production and distribution and the obsolescence of microfilm technology. To read the announcement follow this link.

The cost of producing microfilms and posting them around the world has contributed to the decision to stop the distribution service.

This means that we will no longer be able to order in films from Salt Lake City for viewing in the library. FamilySearch is digitising as much of its microfilm and microfiche collection as possible and expects to complete this work by 2020.

Now is the time to have another look at the FamilySearch catalogue at www.familysearch.org to see if there are records you might wish to consult that are not yet or unlikely to be digitised.

Manorial records, poor law and workhouses records is some of the material that has been filmed through FamilySearch and not necessarily available on the commercial websites. If you find film or microfiche you would like to examine, you need to get your order in soon.
