Spotlight on - The York Society

New Associate MemberYork Town Hall

WAGS welcomes The York Society, Incorporated, as an Associated Member.

Up until 1968 the buildings in the main street of York, Avon Terrace, had remained virtually untouched since construction in the late 1800s and early 1900s. However, a new Department of Local Government order came into force requiring all verandah posts on shops and buildings be removed from traditional main street verandahs.

The huge public outcry prompted the locals to form the York Society in an endeavour to maintain the character of York. Since that time there has been recognition by the National Trust and the Australian Heritage Commission and the town listed on the register of the National Estate as an Historic Town.

The Society is a keen watchdog protecting York's unique heritage values.
