1. 1940 WAN BDM Indexes for WAGS members

Compiled by WAGS volunteers from The West Australian newspaper birth, death and marriages family notices columns, we now have available the 1940 WAGS WAN BDM's Index  in the Indexes and Database section of the members only area of the website. You need to log in to view the data.

The BDM's indexing is an ongoing WAGS Project Team effort, and will provide additional indexes for the WAGS website as they are completed.

A few statistics for the1940 BMD indexes...

There is a total of 8,190 entries in the 1940 BDM's indexes, with 8,796 surnames.

Births - There was 3,754 birth entries recorded in the 1940 editions of The West Australian; 3,701 for 1940 and 53 for 1939, a total of 5,374 surnames, being 3,754 child surnames + 1,593 mothers maiden names. The Smiths were again the most prolific breeders, as they were in 1939, having 35 births to their surname, and another 21 as mothers nee names. Popular first given names for childern in 1940 were; Boys, John = 56; Girls, Margaret = 47.

Deaths - A total of 3,799 entries; for a total of 2,340 surnames, with the Smiths also having the most deaths recorded at 45 for the period

Marriages - 637 entries, 547 different Groom surnames, but only different 535 Bride surnames - a total of 1,082 surnames; the most prominent groom surname being Williams at 6, and of course Smith + Stewart at 5 each; and for the brides, 6 for both Smith and Thomas. The most popular given names for the Groom was William with 31, and for the brides it was Jean at 26.
