30th Anniversary Welcome Function

To kick off our celebrations WAGS Management Committee held a "Welcome to our 30th Anniversary" function on Saturday 3 January for representatives from many organizations associated with WAGS.

Attendees included representatives from the State Library of Western Australia, National Archives, Registrar General BDM, Heritage Council of WA, Affiliated Societies, WAGS Past Presidents, and WAGS Special Interest Group convenors. We have a very good relationship with these organizations and this was an opportunity to announce our 30th Anniversary plans and showcase our facilities.

During the evening Brian Croker, our first president, spoke about the early days of WAGS. The early members did an incredible amount of work to get WAGS up and running. They set a very high standard for others to follow. Over the years many people have spent many hours doing their utmost to improve WAGS facilities and benefits to members.

It was my honour to propose the following toast to WAGS:

To the people that came before us, to current members and to everyone who has made WAGS so successful and such a well respected family history society over the last 30 years - we thank you.

Our Anniversary Cake was decorated in blue and green, the same colours as our 30th anniversary bookmarks that were sent to WAGS members with their December Western Ancestor.

Cutting the cake was shared between our past and present Presidents:

  Ian Scott (2005-2008)
  Lyn Coy (1999-2001)
  Liana Fitzpatrick (current)
  Mary Rogers (1998-1999)
  Brian Croker (1979-1990)
  Bevan Carter (2002-2004)

Edwina Shooter took our guests on a very informative tour of our Library. Our facilities must have impressed a few people as a couple of people said they should join WAGS! We then enjoyed a lovely supper prepared by the 30th Anniversary committee - Margaret Hickey, Lyn Watt and Myra Tomkinson.

All in all, this was a very good start to our anniversary year.
