Leaving old Freo & Sailing into History HMAT Medic (A7)

100 years ago today on the 31st of October 1914, the men of the 11th Battalion entrained from Blackboy Hill training camp to Fremantle. There they boarded the two ships waiting for them in port, joining other troops who had already sailed from the Eastern States.

“A” and “B” Companies with their 6 Officers and 236 men boarded the HMAT Medic (A7), the remainder of the Battalion boarding HMAT Ascanius (A11), 788 men, including 26 officers. They finally departed from Gage Roads 2 days later, and unbeknown to them, destined for Egypt.

Maps tell a story - The 11Bn Original Enlistments 11th Battalion original enlistments, places of birth

We know that the men who made up the original enlistments of the 11th Battalion in Western Australia came from all over the world, but it's not until you see their places of birth on a map that it hits home just how far flung their birth places were.

This is one of 3 maps that we have added to the 11th Battalion website. Makes interesting viewing.

FHWA 11th Battalion Project

The primary objective of this WAGS project is to name as many of the men in the Cheops Pyramid photo as possible by the centenary anniversary of the photo date, being 10 January 2015.

In addition, we are providing a venue for tributes to the men who served in the 11th Battalion to be recorded, and to be readily available to the public as a permanent record.
