World War 1 19 Mar 2016 10:16 #1326

Has anybody found anything from the Camp Chronicle Newspaper available on Trove thanks to Friends of Battye Library

I thought this was very moving

In Memoriam.

Who left Blackboy Hill Camp on the 29th January, 1917,
and was killed somewhere in France on 4th October, 1917.
Good-bye, old pal, the sad news has come through
That, face to foe, unflinching, you've 'gone West.'
One of the best of all the men I knew:
You proved your mettle and you've passed the test.
When shall I meet again a friend so true?
God grant you rest.

A soul that thrilled to nobly-uttered thought;
A mind as fresh as dawn, yet trained and keen;
A sunny heart that joy and gladness sought;
And Life a game to play here straight and clean.
What might have been had all your gifted youth
But grown and prospered till you gave your best?
Your smile was sunshine, and your eyes spoke truth.
God grant you rest.
