TOPIC: Second Site

Second Site 14 Dec 2011 00:07 #174

Hi everyone,
Just want to let you know that I have used Second Site to set up a web page for my family history. It is at www.barber.org.au so please feel welcome to browse.

I am still learning the software so it is still a work in progress

Regards

Hello Geoff,

It looks great! I've fossicked through and found it easy to get around. I like some of the names in your tree such as Sarah Bellchamber.

Great sourcing!

I thought that the MEEKS book was interesting - I'd love to have something like that.

Congratulations!

Hi Everyone,
Subsequent to our meeting today I recommend that those interested in creating a web site at least check for their preferred web site address and purchase (lease) it. The cost is $22.50 for two years.
You can do this at www.webcity.com.au where you can check the availability of your preferred address.
My address is www.barber.org.au
I have noticed that ".org" extensions seem to be favoured by family history sites, so a www.surname.org, or a www.surname.org.au would be my preferences. Remember that the WAGS address is www.wags.org.au

Note for Edwina: I checked your name and there is a good one available!

The next step after this is to purchase Second Site and go to John Cardinal's web site (www.ss.johncardinal.com and click on the link, or go direct to www.familyhistoryhosting.com)) and sign up for his "web site hosting" package (I just use the standard package costing US$69.99 per year). He will then advise how to link your new web site address to his hosting service, and also how to tell Second Site how to use your new web site address.

Once it is all linked up like this you can then use Second Site to read your TMG data and create the web site. Everyone will then think you are an internet genius!!

The hard work then begins - getting the site looking good and cleaning up your data. However, this can happen at your own pace with lots of trial and error, and if enough people are interested we can run a workshop to help everyone. I think it is better to get the web site up sooner rather than later, as it will motivate you to work on your TMG data like never before.

Thanks to everyone (esp. Neil) for the TMG Version 8 insights today.

Edwina mentioned the update pages to Terry Reigal's book, which I just located at:
tmg.reigelridge.com/primer/index.htm

Regards
Geoff

Great work Geoff.

Our illustrious Webmaster (who is constantly having positive thoughts) has suggested that we (he & I) look at the possibility of WAGS hosting our Team's webpages for their geni data.

Just an idea at the moment but we will follow up.

Hello TMGers,

I've bought one!

I tried to buy Shooter.org.au but was rejected as I obviously didn't make myself sound enough like a non-profit organisation. My money was refunded and I bought Shooter.id.au.

I'll let it sit for a little while and then buy Second Site.

Geoff, thanks for the push to do this.

PS I hit reply to Geoff's email that arrived in my email box some days ago but it is only today as I was looking on the forum that I see it didn't reach the forum. Sorry if you see this twice!

Greetings all, I hope you are having a good festive season.

I have finally gotten around to buying Second Site. You will be pleased to learn that I too have managed to develop a simple family tree page(s) quite quickly. the refinement will be a slower process of course.

I am tussling with image size. SS automatically resizes embedded primary images. all other images seem to be hidden and accessed by the little camera icon. it seems that if these are also sized to 200x300 using TMG Utility then when accessed they are too small and the document ones (eg birth certs) cant be read. so it would seem to me that those should be sized larger?

Any way I am having fun with SS.

cheers

Rob,

Good to hear that you are having fun.

You don't have to use the "Alternate Image Folder" for your non-primary photos but if you take them directly as they are linked to TMG you might find that some are way too big.

I have consciously kept the size of all my images on the web small with the thinking that if people want better images they can contact me. However, I have also been working through my images reducing the size of the version linked to TMG to below 300k (certificates are ok at that size). So now if I want to include bigger images I can just switch of fthe Alternate Image Folder Only flag and the SSite database that I end up with won't be too big.

If you want to see all the images rather than the little camera icons for the Primary Image then choose "Embed" rather than the default "Link" for the "Other Person Images" optoin on the Exhibits page.

Just in case anyone else has had trouble with the browse function in TMG Utility and Second Site when trying to set the Alternate Image Folder path, I have ended up having to set both manually e.g.

F:\Neil\Documents\geni\photo_cd\Temp

Note: Use Documents rather than "My Documents" and don't put a "\" on the end.

I have a sample SDF file which might help solve some of the challenges associated with adding user items to your SSite Database. The system wouldn't let me attach an SDF file so email me and I'll send you a copy ( nbradley at iinet dot net dot au

The places where you need to make changes are :-

1. Data, Database - point at your TMG database

2. Exhibits - change the "Set Alternate Image Folder" to point at yours or else untick the box

3. Relationships - change the ID numbers to people in your database that you want to show up.

4. Pages, Site - Change the name to your database

5. Compiler - put in your details

6. User Items

6.1 Main Page Intro
Highlight Intro, click on "edit" at the bottom (the one with a pencil). Click your mouse on the text and press F7 to open the editor. Change the words to suit your database and click OK, OK

6.2 "george_hillier250x300"
Highlight and click edit (pencil at the bottom). Click on the 3 dots next to image and find a photo that you want to use. Change the caption. Click on OK.

Note: you might want to copy this entry (duplicate current item at the bottom) and pick a second photo. If you do change "Image Alighnment" on one to Left and the other to Right.

6.3 Main Page Summary
Similar to 6.1 or you can turn it off by unticking the box

6.4 Notables is unticked (I'll deal with that in another post).

6.5 Charts "James Hillier Descendants"
Highlight and click Edit at the bottom. Change the Title and Subject ID to someone interesting in your database.
Do the same for the other charts or turn them off by unclicking or deleting them

6.6 Maps
You can turn it on by ticking the two boxes. Highlight "Dowerin WA" and click edit. Once the Edit Map box is open click on the Edit button. Click on the Icon showing where Dowerin is and you will get an option to delete it. Now move you map to somewhere interesting for you and add a new marker if you wish. Clck on OK. Now change the Title and click on OK.

You should be ready to build your site - have fun.

Hello Rob,

I'm way behind in emailing but was pleased to hear you are enjoying Second Site. I've not touched mine much as I've been busy with family [14 yr old nephew has stayed for a while and we've been playing piano a lot - duets have improved!] but I'm getting back to it all now.

I've done a lot of data entry in to TMG before Christmas and have cracked the 500 sources level!

Second Site is great for seeing how your data looks and helping with tidying up TMG.

Happy New Year to you all and happy TMGing!

Neil, Thank you for the image info you've passed on. Appreciated.

Neil,
thank you for your advice and sending me the SDF file when I get back to SS it will assist me to get to the next level of sophistication, that is making the main page look better and so on.

I did get the basics sorted out with my first go. the two main issues I had were firstly images other than the primary one were too small so I think the best way around that is to make the default size larger than the 200x300 but less than 300kb so they are big enough to read certificates when opened but not so they blow out the screen, and let SS adjust the primary image as it does.

the second issue I don't think is a SS one but a TMG one; for sources with a repository attached the print out of the reference still records 'repository unknown'. I cant work out how to fix this.

the tree I did was a draft for a cousin of mine so it is not public yet. I have copied it to Dropbox as if I was burning a CD, then sent him the link to the index icon, and it works a treat. so in the absence of publishing a web page this method is a useful way for limited/targeted sharing of a SS family tree.

regards

Robert
