I am living in the UK and cannot do a lot of research about my relatives living/lived in Australia, so I hope there is some enthusiastic person out ther who can help me.

I have records of Richard Holden Sherlock who lived in Melbourne. He had a daughter, Sylvia Ruth, born 1939 who came to the UK on holiday and stayed at our house with a friend of hers, Ginnie Matthews (I hope I spelt that right - it was a long time ago!) I know from a letter written to my Mother from Richard (Dick) Sherlock that Sylvia got married and had two sons, but Dick didn't say what her married name was! Sylvia, husband and her two sons, Tim and Richard (born Feb 1970), moved to WA in 1970. That is all I know. I don't know if Dick has died, and if so, when and where, or what Sylvia's married name is etc. I have searched using Ancestry, but have found nothing. Dick's brother Wilfred Holden Sherlock behaved heroically during WW2 against the Japanese on the island of Wau and there have been several newspaper reports about him.

If anyone knows more about them all or can point me into an area of research, (or even better, knows Sylvia please pass on my email address to her) I would be very grateful

thanks
Richard

Richard Holden Sherlock died 22/4/1999 Nedlands, WA aged 85. Cremated at Karrakatta Cemetery.

I've had a quick look in Victorian marriages but I can't spot him. The CDs only go up to 1942. If you know his wife's name them you may find her as well using the url above.

Presumably Sylvia was married in Victoria so her mge will be too late for the available indexes. WA indexes go up to 1965 for mges - I had a quick look but didn't spot her.

She might be a little too recent for most geni type indexes. Our daily newspaper "The West Australian" runs a "Can You Help" column on mondays. It might be your best bet. I've just had a look online but I can't find the email address. It will be in tomorrow's paper so I'll grab it then if someone else doesn't give it to you first.

You just need to be a little careful that no one posts personal info here about living people.

Thanks Neil,

That was very helpful. I understand about privacy of living people; it was just the hope that she or one of her family read it and replied, or that she had died, when her records would be for public consumption.

Hi Richard,
A Google search has several hits for Richard Holden Sherlock, of which you may or may not be aware. A Trove search, the Australian digitised newspaper site, has mention of Richard in notices on his fathers death in Melbourne, search using the "Advanced" search mode, and enter his full name in "The Phrase" box only. He gets a mention in The London Gazette of Feb 9th 1937 as well.
None of this gets you any further with Sylvia, but may give you a couple of extra pieces to the puzzle. Good luck.
Cheers,
Chris

Hi Neil,

I'm afraid your email link to the newspaper was returned - recipient unknown. I copied and pasted the email address you gave me to avoid transcription errors.

Hi Brian,

First of all, thank you all for the magazine which arrived today. I wasn't expecting such wonders! In reading the magazine, in which there was an article on wills, I realised that if your system works like the UK system, anybody can apply for a copy of a proven will. (We have to pay for it!) If that is the case, I might be able to get a copy of Dick Sherlock's will, in which, if I am very lucky, he will name his daughter Sylvia as his heir and may well mention her married name. Could you, or another member of the team, please tell me where to apply?

Many thanks - again!

Richard
