The Gallipoli Landing - a talk by James Hurst 15 Apr 2018 04:36 #1838

Special event - 21 April 2018, 1.30pm - 4pm, Unit 4/48 May Street, Bayswater, Western Australia

Ahead of ANZAC Day, the Western Australian Genealogical Society is very pleased to host a talk by James Hurst, author of the recently released book ‘The Landing in the Dawn: Dissecting a Legend – The Landing at ANZAC, Gallipoli, 25 April 1915.

The Gallipoli Landing of 25 April 1915 is arguably Australia’s best known battle. It is commemorated each year with a national holiday, services, parades and great media attention. Despite this, the Landing is still a poorly understood battle, coloured by a century of generalisation, misinformation, assumption, folklore, myth and legend.

James Hurst has undertaken a detailed re-examination and reconstruction of the Landing, focusing on the experiences of the 11th Battalion. His approach was to use veteran accounts, supported by a range of sources, in a way that elevates participant’s accounts from anecdote to eyewitness account, thereby providing a new and important perspective on this historic battle.

Details on how to book are available via the Event Calendar on the WAGS website or ring the Library on 9271 4311 during library hours.
