The next meeting of the London and Home Counties Group will be held on Saturday 25 February at 11am at WAGS. Alert readers will note that this is NOT the first Saturday in March - that's because the relentless cycle of public holidays has encroached on our preferred date in both March and June and will stay that way for some years...
Never mind, the topic is a beauty. Peter Hamersley will talk about 'A Mariner's Life in 19th Century London'. Peter's 3-times great grandfather and his three brothers were all seafearers so he has some inside knowledge to share.
And there's always plenty of time to ask questions.
Cheers
Mike

The next London and Home Counties meeting will be on this Saturday, 1st September. As well as the usual review of interesting London information that's come online recently, and general discussion about research, Mike will give a talk on brewhouses, pubs and publicans in London.
Cheers
Mike

The very first meeting of the newly formed London and South of England SIG happens on Saturday December 1st at 11am Unit 4, WAGS.

Mal Parr will be presenting a fascinating series of pictures of London over the years...see if you can pick where they were shot.

And we'll spend time discussing how we can best handle all the various counties we now cover! The group is interested in all the counties south of the ones covered by the North of England Group. For a full list, have a look at our page on the WAGS website.

Hope to see you there.

Cheers

Mike
Co-convenor

Hi folks

As I said in my last message: The very first meeting of the newly formed London and South of England SIG happens on Saturday December 1st at 11am Unit 4, WAGS.

I should have mentioned... as this is the end of year meeting we're all bringing along some nibbles to share and celebrate the launch of the new group. Please join us.

Minutes of our last meeting (held in May) are now on the website. Next meeting (Saturday 7 September, 11am to 1pm), Mike will talk about emigration ports in England. If your ancestors came to Australia from Cornwall, or Norfolk, where did they sail from?

NEXT MEETING Saturday 7th March 2015 11am

We'll start with a short AGM and election of officers. The officers are: Convenor(s), Committee Members (currently 3). Mike and Lesley are happy to renominate as co-Convenors, but if anyone else would like the task, they would be happy to step aside.

After the AGM, Mal Parr will lead us through another of his fascinating presentations of old photos of London and the South of England. The last time Mal did this it was quite a hit. See if you can work out where the photos were taken.

And there will be plenty of time to share successes, ask questions and generally discuss things.

Sere you there

Next meeting Saturday 5 December 2015 11am followed by lunch

At our next meeting Lesley will tell the story of her grandfather's WW1 service in France, compiled from the daily War Diaries and other records. Jake's War is one compelling story about one of the millions who went through years of relentless trench warfare. What was it like? Come to this meeting and find out.
And we'll have a quick look at the newly-released 1939 Register for England and Wales.

As it's the last meeting of the year, please join us for a shared lunch (bring something to share).

Our next meeting on Saturday June 4, 2016 is called 'Off the Beaten Track'. More details on the website - we'll be looking at online sources that are a little different, and Peter Hamersley is going to look at Tracing living relatives using some unusual records.
And there will be an AGM.

Saturday Dec2 - Peter Hamersley will talk about 'Finding the wrong person - it's easy! Peter found out that one of the people he researched recently for a big project (and published the results) was wrong. How did he find out? What did he do to correct it? What can we learn?
And Liana Fitzpatrick will tell us about her recent research successes in Wales.
Please bring something to share for our end-of-year lunch
