TOPIC: Afghans in Australia

Afghans in Australia 04 Feb 2013 14:04 #660

Does any one have any information as to where I can find shipping records that show Afghan/Pakistan cameleers that came with the camels and stayed.
Also where they might have been buried in Australia, records/ histories /etc.
My wife's family have a link into this area, but research is proving to be a dead end.

Hi
If you look at the Dictionary of Western Australians by Ann Atkinson on the catalogue at WAGS or LISWA you should be able to pick it up.

Forget what it is called but it includes a section on the Afghans (many who were not from Afghanistan).
It will give you the biographical data you require and possibly their entry and/or exit from Western Australia.

Regards
Gillian

Sorry for the late response. Been away visiting living relatives!

There is also very valuable biographical information on many many Afghan cameleers in the appendix (pp 166-199) of the book Australia's Muslim Cameleers: Pioneers of the Inland 1860s-1930s by Philip Jones and Anna Kenny. This beautiful book is published by the SA Museum 2007, 2010 following a large exhibition there.

I bought the book in Alice Springs. Possibly available SLWA?
