About the Technology Group

  • PDF
Blogging artYou don’t need to be a computer ‘nerd’ or expert to get some benefit from the Technology Special Interest Group (TSIG).
We welcome new FHWA (WAGS) members who want to get the most out of their computers to help them with their genealogy research.

Our monthly meetings are designed to cover items of interest to the group and we generally follow an agenda like this:

  • Items of general interest from the computer world
  • Keeping your computer safe and healthy from viruses, malware, scams and spam
  • Genealogy programs – who’s using which one, problems, queries
  • Update on Genealogy sources, mostly websites
  • Open forum – queries, comments, successes, problems
  • FHWA/SIG business
Usually this is followed by a session using the big screen; either a demo of a pay-site or a website that may not be well-known, or a workshop/presentation/demo of some technique or genealogy software.

2019 Meetings

February 2019

Those attending the February meeting were asked for their opinions on a name change for the Group and an indication of topics they would like covered over the next ten months.

Robert then gave us an insight into the NBN - the past, the present, the future and everything we need to know before we connect up.

(Robert's presentation can be viewed in the Members' Only Area of the CSIG page.  Login into the WAGS website to access this area)

Genealogy Programs on the Net

  • PDF

Please Note: FHWA does not recommend any particular Genealogical program. Whatever you choose, make sure that the program supports the import and export of GEDCOM files.

Many of the programs listed here are used by FHWA members; have a look at the various features and select one that suits you best. Most can be purchased on line and many have trial or demo versions freely downloadable. Most of these programs have User Groups on the Internet to help solve problems and get the best out of the program.

The last survey of the Technology (previously Computer) Interest Group members showed that most members use one of the following popular programs (listed alphabetically, not in order of preference)

  • Family Tree Maker
  • Legacy Family Tree
  • Reunion for Macintosh
  • Roots Magic
