Vale Maurice Burns

It is with regret WAGS members are informed that Maurice Burns, member 7345, passed
away in Sir Charles Gardner Hospital on 18 November.  There will be many people in
WAGS who will remember Maurice and his great contribution over previous years to
various projects including planning the rearrangement of the Library, to Finance
Committee as well as the North of England, Scottish, Computer and London and South of
England Special Interest Groups. Maurice was like an elder statesman able to offer wise
words and was generous to others with their research.

Our sincere condolences go to his wife Beryl and his family.

Kind regards
Ian Simon
WAGS President

Eastern Australian SIG 30th birthday celebrations

celebration.jpgAt our meeting yesterday a thirtieth birthday cake was cut to mark our birthday.  In 1986
(the same year WAGS was established at Bayswater) we began life as the Victorian SIG
then, just this year we transformed ourselves by widening our research field to extend our
cover to include Queensland, New South Wales, ACT and Tasmania, and become the
Eastern Australian SIG.  Elaine Dickson, Glenda Rowe and Edwina Shooter were chosen to
preform the cutting of the cake.  A very good meeting and a good time was had by all.

Ernie Fowler
Co-convenor Eastern Australian SIG

Big Changes Are Coming to Victorian Genealogy

There are a number of family history societies in existence in Melbourne each of which are
experiencing a reduction in their membership due to multiple causes. As a consequence
discussions have commenced between the GSV, the Australian Institute of Genealogical
Studies and the Cornish Association of Victoria to explore the viability of establishing a
new family history entity. The Societies would combine their resources and establish the
new entity. These discussions have only recently commenced and it is anticipated that
they will continue for some time.

For more information published in a letter to members from the President of GSV click here
