WAGS journal, the "Western Ancestor" has recently won, not just one, but two prestigious Awards.

1)  Australasian Federation of Family History Organisations (AFFHO) - Nick Vine Hall Award

2)  Federation of Family History Societies (FFHS) - Elizabeth Simpson Award

Congratulations go to our Editor, Malcolm Parr, and typesetter Davina Farinola.

wancestor2 Malcolm Parr has been the Editor for many years and always produces a journal with a great blend of articles, information, Society news and interesting photographs.

WAGS members have known for ages that Western Ancestor is a great read, but it is pleasing to see that it is now recognised, not only as the best Journal in Australasia, but also in the UK as the best Overseas Journal.

Winning these awards is a great achievement for WAGS.

AFFHO - Nick Vine Hall Award

The Western Ancestor won First Prize in the inaugural AFFHO, Nick Vine Hall Award for the best 2007 Australasian journal (for societies with more than 200 members).

The Nick Vine Hall Award was introduced this year by the AFFHO to promote family history journals / newsletters in Australasia. It honours the memory of Nick Vine Hall, AM, who has contributed enormously to the promotion of genealogy, particularly in Australia, not only in his numerous CD's, charts articles and books, but also in his efforts to retain the Census in Australia and through his radio broadcasts.

Criteria for this award included "a well presented journal with the best content, both in quality and range of articles, and for the quality and diversity of news items and information appropriate to that society's aims and objectives".

FFHS - Elizabeth Simpson Award

The Western Ancestor also picked up First Prize in the Overseas section of the FFHS, Elizabeth Simpson  award,  for the journal making the best contribution to family history in 2007-2008.

The Elizabeth Simpson Award was first introduced in 1979 and is awarded annually to the society whose journal has made the best contribution to family history during the preceding twelve months. Judging takes place in the first half of the year and the results are announced at the Federation General Meeting in the Autumn. The winning society is awarded a trophy which they may hold for one calendar year and also receives a certificate.

The award is given to the Society who, in the judges opinion, submits a well presented journal with the best content, both in quality and range of articles and for the quality and diversity of news items and information appropriate to that society's aims and objectives.

When considering entries, the judges will consider each journal's contribution in the three key areas of - Presentation, Articles and Information.
