Description

Fromelles – the Final Chapter, a talk by Sandra Playle

The Battle of Fromelles, on 19 July 1916, was Australia’s worst 24 hours suffering 5,533 casualties. The whereabouts of the remains of hundreds of soldiers killed in that battle was unknown for almost a century until the discovery in 2008 of unmarked mass graves at Pheasant Wood.

Sandra Playle, co-author with Tim Lycett of Fromelles The Final Chapters, will focus on the stories of five of the men found in those graves, the discovery and exhumation of their bodies, and subsequent reburial in the new CWGC Cemetery at Fromelles. Her presentation will touch on the battle, and how she and Tim brought together genealogical records, military records, Trove and other sources, and located family members for stories to compile their profiles.

Gold coin donation appreciated.
