Hi Neil

The short answer to your question is that you can't and I'm happy to explain to you why librarians would never recommended such a search strategy. Very expensive and powerful library cataloguing systems do have this facility however its value lies in enabling the staff to assess the strengths of collections and predict space and shelving requirements.

However, provided the Dewey number you want to search by is not too general, I may be able to create a shelf listing for you through the ''back end'' of the system but it will give you a limited view of the range of materials on any topic.

Regards

Julie

Thanks Julie (although I am not convinced)

The Western Australian Family History Books (929.2) appear to be well hidden. How do I find them?

Neil,

Click onto the "Search" tab, enter "family history" into the first box, click go, when results come up, go the the 3rd page (items 21+) they are all there from then on.

Cheers

Chris

A lot of hits that I didn't want. It is also only returning titles which contain "family history" as opposed to all of 929.9 which is what I want.

Shouldn't I be able to use the Boolean capabilities under "Search"? Problem is the neither "Subject" nor "Topic" appear to have the structure that I want.

Neil,

Using the and/or options in the other boxes will reduce the hits, eg. "western" in box two drops it to four or five, however it depends on what the descriptors actually have in the fields, and that depends on the title, subject, and summary for the publication itself & then what the cataloguer actually enters, which can be subjective.

So, the Boolean searches are only as good as the actual entries in all of the fields available. Our system won't give everything you want in one hit, and definitely not a Dewey number & the text searches won't get it; as Julie says it is a little beyond our catalogue package.

Cheers

Excellent answer Chris. You obviously understand Alice very well. Would you like my job?

Julie/Chris

But we have made no progress.

I'm looking for the 200-300 titles (maybe more) under the 929.2 classification.

A search on "family history" only returns a small number of those titles (plus a lot of others) that have Family History in the title. Limiting it down further is of little use as most of the titles I want are missing from the first pass.

Our use of either/or the SUBJECT, TOPIC and KEYWORD fields does not appear to give me the ability hone in on the books of interest. I would have expected to be able to select on KEYWORD (or SUBJECT) = Family History AND KEYWORD = Western Australia. Unfortunately neither component of the search works.

To me the simple answer is to add the ability to be able to search on the Dewey code.

Hi again Neil

From the very start, Alice dug her heels in. She won't allow us to search by Dewey number. It's just not written into the database program.

I've searched the SLWA catalogue by CALL number using 929.20994 which is the Dewey number for Family histories - Australia. (SLWA does not use any further subdivision)

The result? - three titles. I'm sure they have many hundreds that you would classify as being West Australian family histories.

It's all up to the cataloguer and how he/she perceives the content.

Cheers

Me again Neil

In my last reply I should have mentioned that rather than deal with the limitations of Alice and cataloguing, I'd like to help with your query.

When you have a moment, let's discuss and see if we can come up with a way that WAGS Library can assist you.

Cheers
