I can't find my Maternal Great Grandmother

Link to this post 25 Feb

Hi Peter,

I have seen this record but haven't thought of doing a reverse search. Thank you for the tip. I will try this. It is quite confusing as the information from family members I have is that Henry died either just before or shortly after Thomas' birth in 1891 but everything I see is saying that he didn't die till much later.

I will let you know how I go.

Thanks again

Terri

Hello Terri

Have you tried to look up merchant seaman records for Henry Beadle?

I had a quick search of the Clip Project (1861-1913) using the FMP index and found a record for a Harry BEADDEL dated 1910.
If you are able to find a Crew Agreement for your man, then this will give other leads. It should give his age and birthplace.
Once you have found a ship he sailed on, then you can trace backwards and look at other crew agreements for him. You might find other detail that will enable you to locate him on the census returns for 1891, 1881 and 1871 (depending on his age of course).

Hope this helps.

All the best

Peter Hamersley 11940

I have copied a post below I put on Ancestry.com in November 2010 along with the link to the forum with the replies I got.

The fact of the matter is the above lady is very much a mystery. Here is my post:

Thomas Edwin Beadle is my Maternal Grandfather. All I know and can find about him is he was born in Bromley, London on 15 Dec 1891 to Jane(nee Sells) and Henry Beadle who was according to Thomas's Birth Certificate, a Seaman in the Merchant service. Thomas migrated to Australia with his wife Catherine (nee Brunning) and three of their children in 1922 where he stayed until his death in 1969. Thomas and Catherine had 7 children in total. Catherine May, Francis, Gertrude Elizabeth, Walter Thomas, Albert, Maisie and my mother Joan.

I can't find any further record of either parent. According to my mother, Pop's father was drowned at sea just before the birth of Thomas. Apparently Jane remarried to a Mr Stevens and had two daughters Ada and Florence. Thomas was raised by his grandmother. I do not know if it is his Maternal or Paternal Grandmother.

If anyone can shed any light on Jane and Henry that would be wonderful!

One reply on the Ancestry forum pointed out the possibility Jane and Henry never married. Thomas' birth certificate notes Jane as "Jane Beadle formerly Sells". This fellow suggested the possibility that Jane and Henry swapped surnames. Does anyone know of this ever happening?

My mother had a researcher look into the mystery with no luck. I have also recently been looking for a "Florence Jane Sells" or an 'Ada Jane Sells" in the hope the mysterious Jane perhaps dropped part of her name but named her daughters after herself. There has been no luck there either.

I would love to hear from anyone who has any ideas of where I could go from here.
Here is the link to the forum and I have attached a copy of the report from the researcher in London. (Note: She didn't find out anything I didn't already know!)
