Offers to help - London - especially East London

Link to this post 20 Feb

Hello Diane

My apologies for not responding earlier - but I have only just seen your query!

It is a bit out of my area, but I'll try to offer some help.

First of all, have you used the London Parish Registers available on ancestry at all? These are pretty good and you should be able to find exact confirmation and details such as parents, address, occupation etc.
Your baptisms are in different pairshes, so it is important to confirm you have the same family.

Burials are harder to find if you are using the search indexes. However, it is possible to use the files to browse through the registers instead. You will find registers that have not been indexed. This might lead you to the burial of the first Charles mentioned.

This would be the first steps I would take. It is likely these registers were at the LMA, therefore use Ancestry first up.

Once you have confirmed some baptisms, try to widen your search and not rely on the Ancestry search list. Enter different criteria (parents first names only, occupations, and parish etc).

I think the key to solving your puzzle, is to find out as much as possible about the family. This can be very helpful when finding later records.

Hope this helps.

All the best

Peter

Hello Peter,

Thank you for your generous offer and my apologies f my query is outside of your offer!

I am attempting to trace a family whose children were baptised in London / Middlesex but seem to be missing on any census records.

I am told one of the children did immigrate to the USA but haven't yet found any entry into USA as yet.

My query is about understanding the places where baptisms occurred and the number of baptisms as follows:

Daniel CULLING, b abt 1800 (can't find him in the census or his wife, Tabitha BUSSEY, who died before the 1841 census, so he may have remarried but who and where, when is unknown as yet) had the following children baptised:

Charles CULLING, B 15 Sept, St Marylebone, Westminster, London
Baptised: 5 Oct, 1821 St Mary in the Marsh, Norwich, Norfolk

Charles CULLING, b 23 Nov, 1823, Westminster, Middlesex,
Baptised: 21 Dec, 1823 St Marylebone, Westminster, London
Died: 4 Aug, 1878, Culling's Well, Yuma, Arizona (the whose immigration I am hoping to find)

Mary CULLING, b 7 Apr, 1826, Camberwell St Giles, Southwark, London
Died: 1856 St Savior, Southwark, London ( I am assuming this is the correct reference but will need to purchase the certificate for further clues, or, find a burial in a Church Register - do you know of a source for this please Peter?

Charles CULLING, Baptised 15 Mar, 1829, Twickenham, Richmond upon Thames, Middlesex

Daniel CULLING, Baptised, 15 Mar, 1829, Twickenham, Richmond upon thames, Middlesex (so, at the same time as the Charles above)

I'm confused by the number of children bapt Charles without any evidence of deaths of the previous child named Charles.

I would be grateful for any clues or advise you can offer.

Hi Peter, yours is a very generous offer.
Unfortunately I cannot avail myself of your knowledge as the Certificates and other information I have just mention London as a place of origin. No Birth or Marriage records, no Census records, therefore I cannot believe much of what I have. Should something crop up I will keep you in mind. Cheers, Adrian Barnes. WAGS 4812.

Hi All

If anyone wants any kind of help or background information on London, and East London in particular, please feel free to ask.

Whereas I am no expert, I was born and raised there and have researched 200 years of my family history there over the last 30 years or so.

So, it could be something to do with a street where your ancestors lived, or the local area, or the suburb in general, or London as a whole - whatever.

Over time I have collected a lot of London, and East London material including books, maps and photo's. I have also compiled a couple of databases: one of old footballers who played for a famous old club, Upton Park FC (1866-1911) winners of the gold medal for football at the 1900 Paris Olympics; and another of resident ratepayers of St. Giles in the Fields (Seven Dials) parish of London in the mid 18th century.

I lived in East London for my first 33 years and I am happy to help anyone with information if I possibly can.

Please feel free to ask.
