TOPIC: Welcome to the North of England SIG Forum

Welcome to the North of England SIG Forum 08 Oct 2011 05:52 #95

This is a place for discussions to do with the 'old' English Counties of Cumberland, Westmorland, Northumberland, Durham, Lancashire, The North, East and West Ridings of Yorkshire, Cheshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire - plus the Isle of Man. Some of these are classified as Midlands Counties and we even stray further down into the Midlands from time to time if the need arises. So please join us with your questions and comments about people and places in this part of the world.

When you drive north out of London on the motorways the big green signs say (rather ominously) "The North", so I guess your group can claim just about all of England north of the Watford Gap.
You all probably know that ancestry has recently released a huge collection of indexed parish register images for very many parishes in West Yorkshire - Leeds, halifax, Huddersfield, Bradford, etc. This is similar in format to the Liverpool collection they released last year and London the year before.
Genealogy is getting easier.
Cheers
Mike

Yes, I did suggest at the Genie Chatter session last week that Watford was considered to be on the border with the north of England, at least for those of us brought up in and around London. I didn't know about the ominous green sign though!

And yes, thanks to your WAGSNET message I passed on the information about the new ancestry collection. Must go there soon myself to see what both those collections are like.

I was under the impression that north shore of the Thames was the Start of THE NORTH, which makes Watford well and truely pair of NOESIG

Ah Tony, those North of Englanders are a successful lot. It seems they have been expanding their territory again and have moved the border South. The location of their Northern border may well become the subject of dispute once again in the current political situation over there!

Maybe so but I hear rumours that South of England are taking in WALES, with Scotland and Northern Ireland already wanting to break the Welsh could be next.

You are so right Tony. I wonder if any of those South of Englanders might be willing to add to this conversation?

Maybe even our own SIG members might like to do so too. What an opportunity to get started with using a Forum.
