Charles Clark CLAYTON popped up in Katamatite, Victoria, around 1900, married, settled and produced a family. Prior to this he is said to have worked on Australian coastal ships and before that on railways in England as a fireman, notably on the lines running between London and the northern districts. He spoke with a Gordie brogue strongly suggesting a north of England heritage.

His birth date was claimed to be 29 February 1864 or 68. The CCC name is curious and can not be found in census records. A coastal ship that he may have been on did not have a crewman with a name any thing akin to his name.

He told people no-one would ever trace him. Are you able help to prove him wrong?

Clayton is my maiden name. My ancestors back to early 1800s were farmers between Leigh and Warrington, Lancashire, in the North West. A Geordie accent suggests the North East of England. Perhaps we could share notes at some time.

Being a CLAYTON you will understand the huge number of people with this surname. Yes we can exchange information but possibly this will be best done outside the forum. I am inclined toward staying with my man coming from the north east. Let me know if you want to pursue this further and give me a contact email address. Ray
