After Mike's inquiry at Sunday 21 Jan meeting I have uploaded the Irish naming pattern contributed by Frances Finn to the Irish SIG webpage on the WAGS site. I think it is similar, if not identical to the Scottish one.

Irish naming pattern 22 Jan 2018 06:01 #1811

Hi Jenni
Was not sure if it was Mike that requested the naming pattern but I looked it up last night and found one very similar. The difference is only that from child 5 onwards.. To quote...
"This is how the Irish (both in Ireland and first and second generation Irish immigrants to America) named their children for two centuries:
1. The eldest son was named after the child’s paternal grandfather.
2. The second son was named after that child’s maternal grandfather.
3. The third son was named after the father.
4. The fourth son was named after the child’s eldest paternal uncle.
5. Subsequent sons were named after other paternal uncles, in order of the age of the uncles.
Daughters
1. The eldest daughter was named after the child’s maternal grandmother.
2. The second daughter was named after the child’s paternal grandmother.
3. The third daughter was named after the mother.
4. The fourth daughter was named after the child’s eldest maternal aunt.

Guess it could be either or or....but worth knowing both given the large families!
Cheers
