Here's the Genealogical Society of Ireland's message from their website

"Closure of the Daonchartlann Archives and Research Centre of the Society 8th Feb 2017
The Daonchartlann ("People's Archive") the Archives and Research Centre of the Society closes today. We hope to open in a new location in the future. The Society received a 'notice to quit' in December from the Dún Laoghaire Harbour Company after six years in the small premises at Carlisle Pier, which were totally refurbished by the Society in 2010. The Board of the Genealogical Society of Ireland had discussions with Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council but the Council, despite having a number of unused buildings, confirmed that it had 'no suitable premises available' for the Society's Archive & Research Centre.

Friends of the Society who would like to voice their concerns about this closure should contact their TDs, senators or local councillors. If you can assist in identifying a suitable premises which might become available for the Society, please contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Over the years, the Society has made a very valuable contribution to the life of the local and national community, to visitors from around the world. The closure of the Daonchartlann is a major loss to the town of Dún Laoghaire. The Society will continue with its other activities including lectures, meetings, publications, etc."

Looks like it could be hard to influence this matter from here. (The Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Council has unused buildings but doesn't want to share) (Dún Laoghaire is pronounced "Dunn Leery" and is just outside Dublin) But we could try to support our fellow genies. Maybe it would help them to know how much we, who live so far away, value their resources.
