I am currently discussing the possibility of Fintan Mulland and Gillian Hunt, from the Ulster Historical Foundation in Belfast to visit Perth in late May to run a full day seminar on Irish family history research. It would cover both research in Northern Ireland and the Republic. There would be a fee to attend, lower for WAGS members. The two speakers would be on their way to speak at a conference in NZ so we'd only need to cover domestic fares. It would be held either at the State Library or the City of Perth library.

You may have seen their website which has a fairly extensive database on NI records, some free, some pay per view.
www.ancestryireland.com/

The topics under consideration for the Perth seminar include:
  1. Introduction to Irish research - townlands, Irish-Scots history, archives
  2. Irish religious denominations their history, records, gravestone inscriptions
  3. Irish land and valuation records incl Griffiths, landed estate records, Registry of Deeds, Tithes Applotment
  4. Census substitutes
  5. Newspapers and other printed sources
  6. History - Ulster Plantation, emigration, tracking down emigration records
  7. Other: law and order records, Poor Law, wills and testamentary records
  1. Question & Answer session
  2. Brick walls session
Doesn't this sound exciting? I have had a Skype with Fintan and he sounds a very approachable and knowledgeable person.

Can you post here the topics you'd be most interested in. As soon as possible so we can work out what is feasible.

Hello Jenni, I would be very interested to attend this seminar. I'm especially interested in Irish-Scottish history especially in ancient times and Irish history in general is also of interest.

I hope this event will happen. Thanks for suggesting it .

Hi Jenni

Sounds like it could be a fascinating seminar. I would attend just to absorb any info that would be given by the speakers - even if I pick up one research idea the day would be worth it.

H Jenni, I would be very interested in attending. I had a brief trip to Ireland in October 2016. Was fortunate to find ancestors graves/tombs in Castleblayney, Ballinode and Tednevet...but I am still missing my ggg grandfathers wife's name, I was told in Ireland I may need to access Belfast records (I am interested in the marriage/death/birth records of the period 1780 to 1810). Unfortunatel I only had 5 days there and ran out of time. So hopefully if Fintan does this visit to Perth, he maybe able to point me in the right direction. I PS. I have only joined today

That's great Loris
As a member you will be able to benefit from the members' price for the seminar. Registration forms and a poster will be downloadable from the home page of the WAGS website shortly. I will be urging members to book promptly as this is open to the public as well. Unless some magic happens we will be limited to 75 places.
Will keep you posted soon.
