TOPIC: Multimedia storage

Multimedia storage 03 Feb 2020 15:36 #2048

I have been using Personal Ancestral File 2.0 almost since release in 2003, presently via Windows 10. A few years ago I attended a WAGS seminar as I wished to make presentation copies of my tree to my children complete with photos on a thumb drive(read only). From memory at that time neither Family Tree Maker, Legacy nor Roots Magic had multimedia embedded in the program, but had links to media stored elsewhere.on the computer. I am aware my desired program would require more storage but do any of the above programs now embed multimedia? Rod Mason.

No modern genealogy program embeds media in their database. It would make the database extremely slow if it was usable at all.

I can't speak for RootsMagic or Family Tree Maker.

Legacy provides a Media backup which zips linked media into a .zip file. You can then extract the files from the zip on another computer or on a thumb drive.

So with Legacy, at least, it is easy to collect the media you have linked to your family database and share with others.

Legacy will direct import from PAF 2.31 and later
