There are numerous benefits to becoming an Affiliate Society of FamilyHistoryWA (Western Australian Genealogical Society), including:

  • Affiliate Societies can attend the bi-annual FHWA Affiliate Society Conference.  This gives you the opportunity to discuss genealogy matters with other Affiliate Societies.

  • Affiliate Societies can obtain very reasonable priced insurance through FHWA by receiving the benefit of large group discount. This can eliminate the time and hassle of organising your own individual insurance.

  • Affiliate Societies can contact FHWA Management for general advice on administrative and library-related matters.

  • Affiliate Societies own letterhead may include the term “Affiliate Society of the Western Australian Genealogical Society Inc.”.  This is important if you are seeking support from local or state funding projects.

  • Members of an Affiliate Society may use the FHWA library and research facilities during normal opening hours, upon production of a current membership card.  The only cost being for photocopying, and printouts of computer and microfiche.  Early advice of a group attending would be appreciated so that extra staff could be on duty.

  • The Affiliate Society can access the Members Only Area (MOA) of the FHWA website from within their Library.  This section provides quality data, mainly, but not exclusively, of a Western Australian nature.

  • The FHWA library has dedicated computers with subscriptions to ancestry.com, Find My Past and Scotlands People. When visiting the library members of an Affiliate Society can pre-book these computers and have access to these websites.

  • Members of an Affiliate Society can attend the FHWA activities and courses program at FHWA member’s prices. There are sessions for beginners and the more advanced member. This also includes FHWA all day seminars and special events.

  • Members of an Affiliate Society can attend the FHWA lunchtime discussion meetings.

  • Members of an Affiliate Society may join any of the FHWA Special Interest Groups (SIGs), most of whom produce regular publications, either online or as a newsletter.  SIGs are Computer, Convict, DNA, Eastern Australian, Enrolled Pensioner Guards, European, India & South East Asia, Irish, Legacy User Group, London & South Of England, The Master Genealogist, Military, North of England, Scottish, South Australian, Swan River Pioneers and West Australian.

  • The Affiliate Society receives copies of the FHWA Special Interest Group’s newsletters.

  • As an Affiliate Society, your Nominated Representative will receive a copy of the FHWA journal, The Western Ancestor, which is published quarterly.

  • The Affiliate Society can submit reports of your own Society (including notice of your coming events) for free publication in The Western Ancestor.

  • The Affiliate Society can have a webpage on the FHWA website and advertise your Society’s office bearers, library hours and forthcoming events.
  • Members of an Affiliate Society are able to place their own research details on the Members Interest Directory on the FHWA website.

  • Members of an Affiliate Society can subscribe to the FHWA mailing list “WAGSNET”, where they can place their own research queries and view other people’s queries.

  • The FHWANET mailing list may be used to advertise your Society’s events.

  • Members of an Affiliate Society can access FHWA Research Facilities at FHWA Member’s prices.

  • The Affiliate Society may have a FHWA member speak at one of their meetings.

  • The FHWA Bookshop is constantly updating stock at competitive prices.  New books, maps, charts, special interest CD’s such as Warders and Gaolers, Shipping lists and Baptisms are available.  Members of Affiliate Societies can purchase from the Bookshop at FHWA member’s price.

  • Books, CDs and fiche from the FHWA Library are regularly donated to the Affiliate Societies at the FHWA Affiliate Societies Conference.
